Mulled Wine (low sugar)

This is ‘Christmas In A Glass’ for me, it warms the heart, smells and tastes delicious!

 

 

INGREDIENTS:

  • Organic red wine (less additives / less sugar / less sulphites / hangovers aren’t as bad!)
  • 1 x Pink Lady Apple sliced and cored
  • Large Orange sliced and then studded with cloves
  • 1 -2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise
  • Pinch nutmeg
  • Pinch mixed spice / allspice

METHOD:

  • In a large pot add wine and all your favourite spices / fruits.
  • Heat gently until it barely turns a simmer
  • As below heat for 15 minutes up to 3 hours , but to leave flavours infuse properly I personally would leave to a happy medium – 90 minutes (plus the kitchen smells amazing)

 

TIPS:

  • How long will mulled wine last ? Let the mulled wine cool at room temperature, transfer it to an airtight container, and store it in the fridgeit will keep well there for up to three days
  • How long to heat mulled wine ? Cook the mulled wine on medium-high heat until it just barely reaches a simmer. (Avoid letting it bubble — you don't want to boil off the alcohol.) Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
  • If you wish to sweeten add a small amount of brown sugar / honey / maple syrup or to keep sugar down additional fruits / festive spices
